NOTECHS

The NOTECHS framework is a structured method of assessing non-technical (often referred to as CRM) skills that was originally designed to fulfil a pan-European requirement under the Joint Aviation Authorities.

It is based on behavioural marker system and can be used to achieve a number of goals, for example:

a) to allow formal assessment of skills to fulfill licensing requirements.

b) to give trainees feedback on their non-technical skills development.

c) to ascertain whether a particular NTS training initiative is effective.

NOTECHS can be applied with suitable modifications to a wide range of safety critical industries and activities.

The NOTECHS method proposes four Categories and fifteen Elements with corresponding behavioural examples (both effective and ineffective) and is shown schematically below:

Assessing behaviour is not a simple task and requires considerable skill together with a proven methodology to avoid subjective assessments. The NOTECHS framework provides a practical tool to achieve high levels of objectivity.
