Aviation research has identified that in more than 70% of accidents human error is to blame. Extensive research has lead to an understanding of those human failings and development of strategies to minimise their consequences.

Safety in Mind is our foundation course in Human Factors. The course uses the experiences and research from aviation and adapts the lessons learned to help other industries in their management of safety.

Using examples from aircraft incidents and accidents, we demonstrate how the reasons behind them are the same as the incidents in their own industry. We identify 'tools' (i.e. behaviours to adopt) and strategies that can be used to lessen the chance of them occurring in the future. This type of programme is sometimes referred to as 'soft skills' training.

Although aviation Human Factors training, in the form of Crew Resource Management, is now mandated by the Civil Aviation Authority as a required part of all pilot training, the programme cannot just be transferred 'off the shelf' to other industries.

For success it is vital that aviation's experience is not transferred without thought into other industries but adapted to suit organisation and culture.
